Welcome to the Tides of Change project, where history meets innovation on Hartlepool's waterfront. Our mission is clear: to breathe new life into the dockside museum site and transform it into a vibrant hub of culture and heritage.

At the heart of this project lies the Museum of Hartlepool and the iconic PS Wingfield Castle, symbols of our rich industrial and maritime legacy. Together with the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool and Tees Valley Combines Authority, we're embarking on a £52 million regeneration project to revitalise this historic landscape.

Through a thoughtful redesign, we're creating a space that welcomes all, with improved access, enhanced exhibition areas, and engaging learning facilities. The restoration of PS Wingfield Castle stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving our maritime heritage for future generations to enjoy.

But this project is more than just bricks and mortar – it's about community. We invite you to join us on this journey, to share your thoughts, and to be a part of shaping Hartlepool's cultural future.

Project Update

In summer 2023 Hartlepool Borough Council announced a competitive design competition to appoint an architect led team to take plans forward.

In January 2024 LDN Architects were appointed.

As part of The Tides of Change project, the Museum of Hartlepool is undergoing an exciting transformation to enhance the visitor experience for residents and visitors. This includes constructing a new entrance, creating learning spaces, and reimagining exhibits. Central to this is the restoration of the iconic PS Wingfield Castle, highlighting the city's maritime heritage. The project aims to make these cultural assets more accessible to all, while also addressing environmental concerns. Community participation is central to the project, and we aim to provide opportunities for involvement in heritage projects, workshops, and engaging activities. Join us in shaping Hartlepool's cultural future by sharing your thoughts in our online survey.

Thank you for contacting us.  The current work on the Wingfield entails emergency repairs. We are exploring opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the Wingfield Castle project and would welcome further discussion in order to inform the programme. Please contact  museumofhartlepoolenquiries@hartlepool.gov.uk  outlining your interest and contact information.
