The PS Wingfield Castle is a significant piece of shipbuilding heritage and is recognised as part of the National Historic Fleet. This status identifies WC as being of pre-eminent national or regional significance and meriting a higher priority for long term conservation.
The Wingfield Castle Restoration work has now been established and will be split in to three phases. The first of these phases being emergency works required will take place in 2023 to safeguard the vessel, and the following stages being required for fuller restoration.
Next steps will be to appoint a design team for the latter phases and coordinate the project with the Dam Board replacement and relocation of the Trincomalee, to allow dry docking in the Trincomalee dock for repairs.
Be Part of the Wingfield's Future
As part of the restoration project we are asking you to get involved. We have two short surveys for you to give us your views. Firstly, we'd like you to tell us what you would like to see and do on a visit to the Wingfield Castle once the restoration is complete. We will use your ideas to help develop the Wingfield Castle as a visitor attraction to create a sustainable future for the vessel.
Secondly, we would also like you to tell us about your memories of visiting the Wingfield Castle or any memories of shipbuilding in Hartlepool more generally.

The Wingfield Castle is an important part of Hartlepool’s shipbuilding heritage and significant parts of her paddle steam engine is still intact. Many people have memories of the Wingfield castle, going on board to explore, stopping for a bite to eat in the café, or enjoying going below deck on a school visit and having a pirate party.
We’re consulting the public and visitors about what they want to see and do on a visit to the Wingfield Castle once the conservation repairs are finished to create a sustainable future for the vessel.
