Share your memories of how the town celebrated Her Majesty's Coronation and subsequent royal events such as royal weddings or royal visits to Hartlepool.

As we celebrate this amazing milestone for Her Majesty The Queen and for the country, we’re keen to look back at how Hartlepool has celebrated royal events during her reign.

In particular, we’d love to hear people’s reminiscences of how they celebrated the 1953 Coronation in Hartlepool – did you have a street party, for example, or decorate your home or did you receive a commemorative item from school?

We’d also like to hear people’s experiences of subsequent royal events, such as the 1977 Silver Jubilee, when The Queen visited the town, or her later visit in 1993 to open the Marina, or Princess Anne’s 1970 visit to open Middleton Grange Shopping Centre.

As well as recording their personal reminiscences, we’re very much hoping people will share with us their photographs of those events – original photographs will be carefully copied and returned – and lend us items of related memorabilia to feature in the exhibition.

It’s an opportunity to look back on some of Hartlepool’s happiest royal days and to pay tribute to the Queen’s remarkable reign.

 How to share your video

If you have a smartphone, digital camera or computer with a webcam it is very easy to record a video and post it on the site. Remember to get permission from anyone who features in your video before you record them and share the video.

Suggestions for video topics

  • Record a grandparent or other older family member or friend talking about their memories. You could think of some questions to ask them in advance to make your video into an interview if they need some prompts - remember to ask their permission to record them and upload the video before you start. This could be a lovely project for younger members of the family to talk to older relatives about their memories
  • Get a group together (e.g. a group of friends, your class at school, your family) and record a group message for the Queen to wish her well on her Platinum Jubilee

Top tips for recording a video

  1. If you have a tripod or stand, using it to hold your phone or camera will avoid camera-shake and a wobbly video. If you don't have a stand you can make one by leaning your phone against a sturdy object e.g. a pile of books. If using a webcam make sure it is on a stable surface
  2. Do a quick test before you start your recording to check that your subject is in the frame, there is enough light to see them and that you can hear them clearly on the recording
  3. You might want to have a chat with the person you are recording before you start to get their memories flowing and find out if there is anything specific they want to say. This will also help them relax if they feel a bit nervous in front of the camera
  4. Check your camera is recording once you start and during the filming. You don't want to do the whole thing only to find that it has not been recorded!
  5. Keep it informal and have fun making your video!

How to upload your video using the "stories tool"
