Domestic Abuse Support Services - Professionals Consultation
Consultation has concluded
We are currently working with our partners, service providers and service users to review domestic abuse support services in Hartlepool. If you work in a service that works with victims of domestic abuse in Hartlepool then we want to hear from you. Organisations that we particularly want to hear from include (but are not limited to):
- Domestic abuse support services staff
- Housing officers / housing association staff
- Social workers
- Adult social care providers
- Criminal justice, including police, probation, etc.
- Health professionals, including GPs, health visitors, A&E staff, midwives, etc.
- Teachers and school staff
How to take part
- Download and read the Hartlepool Domestic Abuse Needs Assessment (on the right of the screen)
- Use the ideas board tab like a virtual round table discussion. Post your ideas and like and comment on other people's ideas
- Use the problem solver tab to post your solutions to these specific problems raised in the needs assessment:
- Use the case studies tab to read and reflect on the real-life case study provided and then add your own professional experience of working with victims of domestic abuse

How it works and confidentiality
We are using open environment consultation tools to get the conversation flowing in the same way as in a round table discussion. The ideas board works like writing a virtual post-it note and sticking it on a virtual wall. Please like and comment on other people's comments and add your own.
The case studies tool asks you to tell us the story of your professional experience. These are moderated before they appear on the site and you will receive an email notification when your story is posted.

We want to hear from professionals working in the domestic abuse field about:
- Examples of where services are supporting victims effectively and making an impact
- Examples of where services are not meeting the needs of victims, why not and what we can do to improve
We have picked out some of the issues raised in the recent Needs Assessment and invited comments to get you started but feel free to add any other comments, ideas or suggestions that you think it would be good for us to know about. Write your idea on a virtual post-it note and stick it on the board and comment on each others posts to get the conversation flowing. Also, "like" posts that you agree with to show us which ideas are resonating with DVA professionals.
Remember posts will be visible on the site immediately so please don't post anything that could identify individual service users / clients.

How can we better support those presenting with complex needs?
"Complex needs" often refers to problems with drug and alcohol but we are also seeing victims presenting to services with other multiple and complex needs including: * housing needs * parenting needs * mental health needs * care needs related to age or disability As a professional, what is your experience of working with people with complex and / or multiple support needs? What can we do better?

Talking to survivors of abuse
People that I have spoken to about their experience tell me that at the time they did not necessarily know or understand the situation that they were in and so had no idea about what to do to get help or how to go about it. An ability to 'think straight' has been described to me as impossible when you are in an abusive situation. Professionals need the courage to talk to people with sensitivity and be resilient in order to help people get the support they need.

To know if our services and resources are being used most effectively we need to be able to define what success looks like, measure outcomes and evaluate what is working and what is not. As a professional, how do you think we should approach this?

Domestic abuse sufferers need safety and suitable accommodation .
Domestic abuse sufferers need safety and suitable accommodation ; some sufferers pose risks to themselves and others so accommodation providers need to be trained in risk management rather than having policies which are a barrier . This is specialist work and needs to be funded accordingly .
